Do You Hear What I Hear?

Some people like to write in complete silence. This irritates me. A lot! The ticking of the clock, the roar of the furnace coming to life, the beating of my heart, all these simple noises become magnified to gargantuan proportions.

I like noise. I’m good with distraction and I’ve been known to tune out television, ringing phones, and even hungry family members looking for dinner.

When I’m working from my home office where there isn’t a whole lot of extra noise, I have to create my own. And since it’s not only strange to bash on your filing cabinet with a wooden spoon, but it also occupies a typing hand, I create noise with musical playlists.

I have some old standbys on my writing play list (I’ve been known to listen to angsty female folk-ish singers), but I also like to mix it up with some new stuff. So each book has a different ‘soundtrack’.

I recently released Sugar Crash which is a story about a single mother who has to learn how to trust and love in order to cope when her daughter is diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes. The soundtrack for this book was very eclectic. Here’s a few of my favorites.

Pretty eclectic right? A few of these songs actually inspired actual scenes, some didn’t. If you’ve read the book…take a guess.

And hey, if you haven’t read it yet…what are you waiting for? Check it out!

So, what do you listen to when you’re writing? Do you have a soundtrack? Do you prefer general noise or are you one of those total silence people?

I love how music can inspire writing. Florence + the Machine is great.

I’ve noticed as I get older, music distracts my thinking. Maybe because I AM getting older. Boo! Sometimes, I will start out with music and then have to shut it off, as well as shut my home-office door so I can THINK. Whatever works, I say.

  3. I can write either way; it just depends on the surroundings. At a cafe, I need music to block out the noise. At home, not always (unless the kids are around!). Once I get going, I don’t hear anything. This annoys my husband.

    And congrats on Sugar Crash!

Don’t hate me, but I’m one of those write-in-silence people. The only music I can handle is instrumental classics playing so quietly in the background that I might as well not have them playing at all. I think that means I don’t focus well. ::sigh:: I KNOW that’s what it means!
