It’s Conference Time Again

On Wednesday, Trish posted about what to pack for the upcoming Surrey Writers’ Conference. This is a great list, because the conference is less than a week away and I have no idea what I’ll be taking with me this year. I’m sure I’ll refer to the list while frantically gathering my stuff the night before I leave.

There's always some of this going on too.

With only a few days before I jet off to this years conference, my thoughts are definitely preoccupied with what I hope to get out of the weekend. There are many reasons to attend a writers’ conference, and I think it’s important to go in with a focus or a plan of some sort.

The first year I went, I wanted to absorb as much as possible. Attend everything, and cram as much information as possible into my brain. In other years, I was looking for an agent. I obsessed about the appointment where I’d sit across from the New York God or Goddess, wipe my sweaty palms on my pants and ramble on about my manuscript. All these appointments went well.

This year, my focus has changed yet again. I’m not as interested in securing an agent as I was in the past. Although I will keep my appointment because I have a great deal of questions for her. No, this year I’m mostly interested in the inspiration aspect of the conference. I cannot wait to surround myself with other people who love words and writing as much as I do. People who get excited when you ask them about their stories, who get worked up telling you about their characters as if they’re real people.

I cannot wait to spend a weekend drinking wine, meeting new writing friends and reuniting with old ones, learning craft techniques and filling my brain with ideas for future stories.

I know I’ll come home exhausted. But I also know I’ll come home excited to get back to it. A fresh fire will be lit and I’ll be ready to write. I’m ready, bring on #Siwc2011!

What about you? What do you like to get out of a writers’ conference? What’s your favorite one?
