Top Things to Bring to a Writer’s Conference

Leaving on a Jet Plane, don’t know if I’ll be back again..

Seven sleeps!

Well, actually I do know. I’m heading out in one week to the Surrey International Writers’ Conference. YAY!!! It’s a great conference, with an excellent list of agents, editors and authors all waiting to teach yours truly how to be a bestselling novelist. (Okay, maybe they’ll be teaching everyone that and more) I highly recommend you check it out.

This is also a fab conference for networking, all the Wordbitches will be there staking hanging out in the bar after a long day of seminars and learning.

I’m terribly excited to be going away and having a conference to go to makes it a doubly great weekend. But I’m starting to wonder about what I need to bring. So I thought I’d post my list and get suggestions about anything I might have forgotten.

THINGS TO TAKE TO CONFERENCE

  1. Three copies of my chapter one. (Must remember to polish it up) This is for the agent pitch, the author blue pencil and the SiWC Idol (maybe).
  2. Three copies of my query/pitch. One to mark up. One to read to memorize for the agent and one in case I lose the other two.
  3. Plane Tickets. Always helpful.
  4. Bottle of wine. Prices in the bar are pretty outrageous. Party in our room!
  5. Laptop. In case I have any spare time, because I always feel inspired to write while I’m there.
  6. Notebook and plenty of pens. ‘Nuff said.
  7. Phone for tweeting. Because everyone wants to sit next to someone tweeting about what they’re learning in a session. I must remember the important hashtags. #siwc2011 #fntwp and #wordbitches, of course.
  8. Business cards. I haven’t made these up, but I was thinking of just printing a couple of dozen on my own to exchange with people instead of writing down my email address on bar napkins.
  9. Bottle of wine. Wait did I already say that? Are you sure? Well, a second one couldn’t hurt.
  10. Snacks. Cause those hotel munchies are WAY too expensive.
  11. Books for authors to sign. They always have a lot of amazing authors at this conference to stalk mingle with. I’m especially looking forward to meeting Bob Mayer.
  12. Chocolate. This does tremendous things for a nervous soul before a pitch appointment.

Can you think of anything I’ve missed? What’s your favourite thing to bring to a conference or on a trip?
